The 150th anniversary of John Henry Newman’s reception into the Roman Catholic Church was marked by an international conference at Oriel College, Oxford in 1995. This book is a carefully edited selection of the best papers from his conference. His own autobiographical account ranks with St. Augustine’s Confessions as a spiritual classic; but it is also one of the masterpieces of Victorian prose and represented the first serious challenge to the long English ‘no Popery’ tradition. Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, which set out his ultimate theological reasons for joining the church of Rome. Fascinated by the phenomenon of conversion, Newman not only dramatized it in two novels, but towards the end of his life he also completed his magnum opus on the philosophical justification of religious assent, Grammar of Assent. Newman are explored in this wide-ranging and illuminating study.
