Nobel Prize–winner Aleksandr Solzheitsyn’s Between Two Millstones, Book 1: Sketches of Exile, 1974-1978 has been selected as a 2019 Outstanding Academic Title by Choice magazine. This year’s Outstanding Academic Title list includes 521 books and digital resources chosen by the Choice editorial staff from among the over 4,600 titles reviewed by Choice during the past year and the more than 21,000 titles submitted to Choice during this same period. These outstanding works have been selected for their excellence in scholarship and presentation, the significance of their contribution to the field, and their value as an important—often the first—treatment of their subject.
Between Two Millstones, Book 1 begins on February 13, 1974, when Solzhenitsyn found himself forcibly expelled to Frankfurt, West Germany, as a result of the publication in the West of The Gulag Archipelago. Solzhenitsyn moved for a time to Zurich, Switzerland, and was considered the most famous man in the world, hounded by journalists and reporters. During this period, he found himself untethered and unable to work while he tried to acclimate to his new surroundings. Between Two Millstones dramatically reflects the pain of Solzhenitsyn’s separation from his Russian homeland and the chasm of miscomprehension between him and Western society. The book is translated by Peter Constantine and is part of The Center for Ethics and Culture Solzhenitsyn Series.
