The University of Notre Dame Press is saddened to share the news of the passing of our friend and colleague, retired senior acquisitions editor Charles “Chuck” L. Van Hof, of Crystal Lake, Illinois. Chuck came to Notre Dame Press in 2004 from Wm. B. Eerdmans, where he was employed for twenty-four years as managing editor and later as senior editor for history, religious, and trade books. He worked at Notre Dame Press for ten years acquiring in the fields of philosophy, theology, history, and political theory. Some of his best-selling and critically acclaimed titles include The Anticipatory Corpse: Medicine, Power, and the Care of the Dying by Jeffrey P. Bishop, Simone Weil: Attention to the Real by Robert Chenavier, The Quest of the Absolute: Birth and Decline of European Romanticism by Louis Dupré, and Minding the Modern: Human Agency, Intellectual Traditions, and Responsible Knowledge by Thomas Pfau.
Our sympathy goes to Chuck’s wife, Gloria, and his children, Jane Van Hof, Jeremy (Jill) Van Hof, Christopher (Andrea) Van Hof, Zachary Van Hof, and Virginia Van Hof.
