Anna M. Nogar’s book, Quill and Cross in the Borderlands: Sor María de Ágreda and the Lady in Blue, 1628 to the Present, received an Honorable Mention for the Thomas J. Lyon Award at the Western Literature Association’s annual conference in September. This award honors books that are outstanding scholarly studies on the literature and culture of the American West. The award is named after a former editor of the Western Literature Association’s journal, Western American Literature.
Krista Comer, one of the award committee members, says, “Impressive in subject matter, scope, and size, Anna Nogar has given us a work that spans Spanish spiritual history and coloniality, Mexican colonial literary studies, US Southwest and Native studies. It combines folkloric ‘milagros’ (and the figure of Lady in Blue) with a recovery project of colonial writing by a woman, and the travel of that writing and of female authority, through all kinds of twists and turns, into the present including its renewed presence in Chicano/a studies. Its archives of Spanish and English language materials offer the fields of Western American studies and Borderlands studies examples of scholarship and expanded language archives that will take our work in needed directions.”
Anna M. Nogar is an associate professor of Hispanic Southwest studies in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of New Mexico.
