“The Glory and the Burden”: The Book to Read Leading up to Midterm Elections

The recent reversal of Roe V. Wade, combined with President Joe Biden’s latest 42% job approval ratings, lend themselves to a potentially unpredictable outcome in the United States midterm elections on November 8, 2022. University of Notre Dame professor emeritus Robert Schmuhl’s new book, The Glory and the Burden: The American Presidency from the New Deal to the Present, Expanded Edition, examines the American presidency for nearly a century, providing a compelling picture of how the functions of the office and who occupies it have changed over the decades. The book’s insights clarify the importance of this year’s dramatic midterm election cycle. In considering how to vote in the upcoming election, the insights of history can illuminate the stakes of the present. Schmuhl’s expanded edition specifically investigates the election of Joe Biden in 2020, the transition of the White House from Donald Trump to Biden, and Biden’s first several months in office. As this election will shape the final two years of Biden’s presidency, revisiting its onset is vital.

Professor Schmuhl has several events scheduled for the book’s release:
