Notre Dame Press Celebrates University Press Week, November 14–18, 2022

As University Press Week enters its second decade of celebrating excellence in university press publishing, Next UP has been chosen as the theme for this year’s event.

The theme highlights the dedicated work performed by those in the university press community to seek out, engage, advance, and promote the latest scholarship, ideas, best practices, and technology. University presses are incredibly creative and resourceful, working in concert with their authors, readers, and institutional and business partners, and Next UP reflects that spirit of constant learning, adaptation, and evolution.

Notre Dame Press is pleased to share the following virtual and in-person UP Week initiatives with faculty, students, alumni, friends of the university, and members of the local community.

UP WEEK GALLERY

The UP Week Gallery features 60 projects exemplifying the ways that university presses’ work reflects a spirit of constant learning, adaptation, and evolution. These books are all featured at Bookshop.org. Notre Dame Press selected Wes Jackson and Robert Jensen’s important book An Inconvenient Apocalypse: Environmental Collapse, Climate Crisis, and the Fate of Humanity. At this year’s annual U.N. climate conference, known as COP27, leaders and experts continue to raise increasing alarm that time is running out to avert catastrophic rises in temperature. Jackson and Jensen confront these harsh ecological realities and the multiple cascading crises facing our world today and argue that humanity’s future will be defined not by expansion but by contraction.

“The goal of An Inconvenient Apocalypse isn’t to try to convince people of the reality of humankind’s environmental and societal crises. . . . Instead the book takes these threats as a starting point and spends the majority of its lean page count exploring their implications and how we might best respond to them. It succeeds commendably in this regard.”
