New Paperback Release: “Stories from Palestine” by Marda Dunsky

Now available in paperback, Stories from Palestine: Narratives of Resilience highlights the agency of Palestinians in their everyday life under Israeli occupation, based on interviews conducted with women and men across the West Bank, Jerusalem, and Gaza Strip. Their narratives illuminate relatable aspects of daily life under occupation that extend beyond media tropes of oppression and violence to Palestinian humanity, which is key to understanding the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Author Marda Dunsky interviews farmers, scientists, entrepreneurs, writers, educators and cultural curators, among others, in Palestinian villages, towns, cities and refugee camps—blending their narratives with historical background and data to contextualize their experiences and perspectives as individuals as well as members of this particular Palestinian society. As Booklist observed, “Palestinians are geniuses at making a way out of no way, of defying a 50-year occupation with courage and creativity. . . . Dunsky is unsparing in describing the human rights violations Palestinians endure, but her interview subjects want to be seen not as victims but as vibrant people with much to contribute.”

Stories from Palestine is a powerful reminder that the path to peace requires an inclusive hearing of voices from within the arena of conflict as well as recognition of the agency of actors there and beyond. The new paperback edition can be purchased on the Notre Dame Press website and previewed in the author’s blog and a video slideshow.
