New Paperback Release: “Alasdair MacIntyre” by Émile Perreau-Saussine

Scottish-American philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre is one of the most widely-read scholars of the twentieth century, a theorist of capitalist modernity concerned with the human pursuit of the good and true. Now in paperback, Alasdair MacIntyre: An Intellectual Biography focuses on the evolution of MacIntyre’s politics, theology, and philosophy, as well how it comments on social progress today.

Author Émile Perreau-Saussine surveys MacIntyre’s complex intellectual development, from his critiques of the limits of modern liberal individualism to his writings on Aristotelian Thomism, which he believed held the best counterarguments to the failures of liberalism. Perreau-Saussine also sheds light on MacIntyre’s nuanced relationship with the Catholic Church and Marxism, both of which played a large role in influencing his thought.

Alasdair MacIntyre provides the essential context for readers and scholars who seek to better understand MacIntyre’s work. Publisher’s Weekly states that this biography “provides a penetrating overview of the ideas of 20th-century moral philosopher Alasdair MacIntyre. . . . Perreau-Saussine proves a talented historian of ideas, cogently elucidating how such diverse traditions as Marxism, Catholicism, and Aristotelianism come together in MacIntyre’s writings.”
