Notre Dame Press to Release Two Books on Notre Dame Football

This Fall, Notre Dame Press will publish two must-have titles for fans of Notre Dame football. Fighting Irish Football: The Notre Dame Tradition in Photographs, by Charles Lamb and Elizabeth Hogan, presents a beautifully illustrated pictural history of Notre Dame’s football program. Meanwhile, Ara: The Life and Legacy of a Notre Dame Legend, by Mark O. Hubbard, explores the life of legendary Notre Dame coach and two-time national championship winner Ara Parseghian. These books will allow readers to take a deep-dive into the Notre Dame football tradition.

Fighting Irish Football features 144 photographs, carefully hand-selected by Lamb and Hogan, who boast more than 50 years of combined experience working in the collections of Notre Dame Archives. At the same time, the book uses these photos to tell a story, supplying valuable context for readers interested in a behind-the-scenes look at this historic franchise. Paul F. Gullifor, author of The Fighting Irish on the Air, comments that “These photographs are timeless, rare, and take the reader back to the greatest moments of Notre Dame football.”

Hubbard’s Ara tells the story of Coach Parseghian’s life, beginning with his previously unexplored Catholic upbringing, extending through his legendary career at Notre Dame, and finishing with his post-retirement humanitarian efforts. The book also features a foreword by Rocky Bleier. This engaging and historically rich biography will appeal to Notre Dame fans, as well as sports enthusiasts.

Gregory P. Crawford, president of Miami University, wrote: “Mark Hubbard delivers a comprehensive account of Ara’s multifaceted life. He introduces us not just to the legendary coach but also to the son of immigrants, the mischievous prankster, the astute businessman, and the devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Amidst his family’s battles with illness, Ara emerged as a beacon of hope and healing. Hubbard paints a portrait of joy, heartbreak, selfless service, and inspiration, celebrating a life truly well lived.”

Fighting Irish Football and Ara will both be released on August 1, 2024. For more information, or to request an advance review copy, contact Steffi Marchman, shoffma7@nd.edu, 574-631-4905.
