We are pleased to announce that Steven Rozenski’s Wisdom’s Journey: Continental Mysticism and Popular Devotion in England, 1350–1650 has been selected as the recipient of the prestigious Hagiography Society Book Prize, awarded annually to the author of a first scholarly book that makes a significant contribution to the study of saints, virtue traditions, and sanctity.
This accolade recognizes Rozenski’s exceptional contribution to medieval and early modern scholarship, with the Hagiography Society stating that “Wisdom’s Journey transcends two important boundaries with confidence and to the intellectual profit of its readers. It traces and evaluates the journeys of devotional texts from the Continent to England.”
In Wisdom’s Journey, Rozenski delves into the transformative influence of translated devotional and mystical texts in late medieval and early modern England. While Martin Luther’s translation of the Bible is often celebrated as a hallmark of the Protestant Reformation, Rozenski redirects attention to the profound effect of vernacular translations of the works of Henry Suso, Catherine of Siena, and Thomas à Kempis. These texts, alongside Richard Rolle’s devotional writings, had a lasting influence on lay religious practices well into the seventeenth century.
