50 Years with the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature

The year 2024 marks an important milestone for the University of Notre Dame Press. For 75 years, we have been the proud publishers of rigorous and compelling scholarship that engages the most enduring questions of our time. Since our founding in 1949, the Press has developed thriving lists in a wide variety of disciplines, most notably our flagship publications in religion, theology, and philosophy.

As we celebrate this milestone, it is a delight to reflect on the partnerships and institutions that have played a critical role in our history. Thus, it seems fitting that 2024 is not only the University of Notre Dame Press’s 75th anniversary, but also the 50th anniversary of our first attendance at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature.

In 1974, the Press’s newly hired Director, James Langford, took a booth at the Annual Meeting in Washington DC. While there, he showcased the Press’s already flourishing lists in religion and philosophy and established our decades-long commitment to the scholars of the AAR and SBL. Through these relationships, Notre Dame Press became a powerhouse in academic theology, with publications from preeminent scholars like Alasdair MacIntyre, Stanley Hauerwas, and Josef Pieper—a standard that we are honored to continue today with books from authors such as David Bentley Hart and Tomas Halik. Notre Dame Press’s success was built on a foundation of service to the scholarly community, and we are proud to be a part of the long history of world-class research and experts brought together each year at the Annual Meeting.

Today, the exceptional and widely acclaimed books we publish in religion, theology, and philosophy are the cornerstone of an innovative and sustainable publishing program, and each year we eagerly look forward to joining the academic community at the Annual Meeting. In 2024, we are delighted to present a lineup of more than 150 individual titles that includes both the leading edge of scholarly thought and timeless classics.

Books are a powerful force for good in the world. As we look to the future, we are thrilled to continue our tradition of excellence with publications that foster diverse voices in religion and theology, address urgent ethical questions for a modern world, and invest in the Catholic intellectual tradition. We couldn’t ask for a better partner and forum for connecting scholars, students, readers, and friends than the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature.

We can’t wait to see you in San Diego, and at the Annual Meeting for many years to come.
