“Beautiful Ugliness” Named Finalist for AAR Religion and the Arts Book Award

The University of Notre Dame Press is proud to announce that Mark William Roche’s Beautiful Ugliness: Christianity, Modernity, and the Arts was selected as a Finalist for the American Academy of Religion’s Religion and the Arts Book Award.

The AAR Book Awards “recognize new scholarly publications that make significant contributions to the study of religion. The awards honor books of distinctive originality, intelligence, and creativity, and these titles affect decisively how religion is examined, understood, and interpreted.”

In Beautiful Ugliness, Roche examines the intersection of the beautiful and the ugly and offers a new way to understand, interpret, and evaluate how ugliness can contribute to beautiful art. He provides a comprehensive and unique framework that integrates philosophical and theological reflection, historical analysis, and interpretations of a large number of works from the arts. Including 63 color illustrations, this book shows a new perspective from which to engage with art and demonstrates that though ugliness is usually considered the antithesis of beauty, ugliness nonetheless contributes significantly to the beauty of many artworks.
