Six Notre Dame Press Books Receive Catholic Media Association Book Awards

On July 8, 2022, the Catholic Media Association announced the winners of the Catholic Media Association 2022 Book Awards during the Catholic Media Conference in Portland, Oregon. This program recognizes the outstanding work of publishers, authors, and book editors that support the faith-filled life of Catholic readers. Winners receive an award certificate and are recognized by their peers during the Annual Catholic Media Conference. Six University of Notre Dame Press books received top honors.

The Eucharistic Sacrifice by Sergius Bulgakov

First Place, Ecumenism or Interfaith Relations

This first English translation represents Sergius Bulgakov’s final, fully developed word on the Eucharist. This work, written in 1940, belongs to Bulgakov’s late period and is his last, and most discerning, word on eucharistic theology. The introduction by Mark Roosien provides a brief history of Bulgakov’s theological career and a description of the structure of The Eucharistic Sacrifice.

The Way of Medicine: Ethics and the Healing Profession by Farr Curlin and Christopher Tollefsen

Second Place, Faith and Science

Today’s medicine is spiritually deflated and morally adrift; this book explains why and offers an ethical framework to renew and guide practitioners in fulfilling their profession to heal. This book is part of the Notre Dame Studies in Medical Ethics and Bioethics series.

Defiance in Exile: Syrian Refugee Women in Jordan by Waed Athamneh with Muhammad Masud

Second Place, Immigration

“This slim volume by Athamneh and Masud movingly portrays the tragic condition of the millions of Syrians uprooted from their country because of the ongoing civil war that began in 2011. In particular, the authors focus on the impact on women living in the Zaatari refugee camp, located in the Jordanian desert.” —Choice

Regret: A Theology by Paul J. Griffiths

Third Place, Theology: Theological and Philosophical Studies

“Griffiths performs . . . an analysis on a range of statements about regret, many of them drawn from literary works, in an effort to see what Christians can say about the topic. . . . Griffiths writes that theology first of all must respond to God. After that, ‘it should seek to be interesting.’ Regret certainly is.“ —Commonweal

The Rights of Women: Reclaiming a Lost Vision by Erika Bachiochi

Third Place, Marriage and Family Living

“Erika Bachiochi, in her book The Rights of Women: Reclaiming a Lost Vision, offers a memorial to Wollstonecraft, an effort to reclaim the moral vision of this early feminist for our time. . . . I earnestly commend Bachiochi’s book to a wide audience and to feminists of every stripe.” —Marginalia

The Rights of Women is part of the Catholic Ideas for a Secular World series.

Faith, Nationalism, and the Future of Liberal Democracy by David M. Elcott, C. Colt Anderson, Tobias Cremer, and Volker Haarmann

Honorable Mention, Faithful Citizenship/Religious Freedom

“Elcott and his coauthors have come together across religious and cultural divides and exemplified a clear commitment to liberal democracy. Their work challenges faith leaders and laypersons alike to do the same and join together across seemingly insurmountable boundaries to work towards a global emphasis on human rights and dignity for all people.” —Reading Religion
